Me

Hi! My name is Meg Goodfellow, Registered Nurse and Licensed Marriage/Family Therapist. I am also the founder and (sole) therapist of Good Counsel. I work from a Health at Every Size, body inclusive, anti-diet, fat liberation, LGBTQIA affirming lens.
I ascribe to the philosophy of the humanistic therapist, Carl Rogers, in providing clients with genuine warmth, empathy, and unconditional positive regard. I value the lens of social justice, and acknowledge the role of the “system” in creating and maintaining illness and oppression.
I believe the most incredible journey in life is the one in which we are curious about possibilities and “what if’s”. I bring my whole heart, my whole self into the hour with you. It is your hour where you can curse and cry. Nothing is off limits, nothing will be judged and every emotion is valid.
Philosophy
Therapy is a journey of healing and hope. I will encourage you to trust your body, your intuition, and yourself in what you need. I will encourage you to explore and make mistakes. We will work together to develop techniques, skills and new ways of understanding obstacles as opportunities. Together we will work on building achievable, tangible and practical skills and celebrate successes in the journey of hope, health, and healing.
I believe everyone has resiliency and that therapy is only effective when it is engaging and supportive. I tailor sessions thoughtfully and intentionally to address your concerns and uncertainties. I lean towards a strengths based, solution focused, highly collaborative, and integrative approach enhancing skills you already use.
Experience and Qualifications
I have a variety of educational experiences under my belt, including obtaining a bachelor’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in coaching and minor in nutrition from Southern Utah University, following by becoming a Registered Nurse at Tacoma Community College. I then worked as an RN at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington for a while before taking some time to be at home with my 3 children. As a mom I learned a vast amount about the world of developmental delays, autism, severe health problems, IEP’s, occupational therapy and behavior problems through my experience with my own children. I have gained lot of knowledge through life experiences and doing my own work, about fat positivity, radical belonging, social justice, and the Health at Every Size paradigm.
In the meantime, I spent 10+ years volunteering with and mentoring local youth and gaining a passion for helping teens navigate those often troublesome years. I eventually returned to school to obtain my master’s degree in psychology and training as a marriage and family therapist from Brandman University. I completed a 9-month internship with MultiCare Behavorial Health’s Child and Family services, and for last 4 years have continued to work there professionally with kids, teens and families working through a variety of mental health and life challenges. I have worked with many diagnoses, including eating disorders, developmental problems, childhood trauma, self-esteem problems, OCD, body-image struggles, self-harm, LGTBQI issues, and several more. I enjoy working with teens and adults. My medical knowledge, life experiences, and education help me have a “whole person” view of clients and the unique problems that they face.
